Safety and Health Study Camp

Training Objectives and Program Purpose

Given the wide variety of hazardous substances and biological materials used in laboratories at universities, colleges, and vocational high schools, many chemicals present different potential risks. Providing appropriate occupational safety and health education and training for newly recruited faculty, staff, and students is one of the primary challenges in promoting campus safety and health initiatives.

Delivering essential safety and health education and training to new faculty, staff, and students equips them with foundational knowledge to proactively adopt disaster risk reduction measures, as well as basic concepts of emergency response, recovery, and reconstruction. This not only enhances their awareness and competencies in safety and health but also yields significant disaster prevention benefits.

Program Goals:

This program aims to organize safety and health workshops during the summer and winter breaks, specifically targeting newly recruited faculty, staff, and students who will enter the workplace. Each workshop will span 14 hours, covering topics such as safety and health education, biological safety, and emergency response.

The curriculum is designed to meet the essential training requirements for new personnel, including safety and health practices, emergency preparedness, and biological safety education. To ensure the effectiveness of the training, a post-training assessment will be conducted to evaluate participants' comprehension of the course content. This evaluation aims to further enhance their safety and health awareness and competencies.

Eligible Participants

Graduate students, research assistants, faculty, staff, and part-time student workers (employed under labor contracts) at the university who need to enter the workplace, as well as individuals interested in occupational safety and health, are welcome to register.

Note: Master's and doctoral students who meet the following conditions:

  1. Do not receive salaries from the university or their academic advisor.
  2. Do not engage in or perform research-related tasks within the university under the direction or supervision of their academic advisor.

With the consent of their academic advisor (or department), they may sign a declaration form (attached) and submit it to the center for record-keeping. Such individuals are exempt from mandatory occupational safety and health training.

Training Course Introduction

  • The courses are divided into three categories: A, B, and C. Category A is a compulsory course for all participants, while categories B and C are elective, allowing participants to choose based on their interests and the nature of their experimental (research) activities.
  • At the end of the workshop, a test will be conducted. Those who pass the test will receive a certificate of completion.
  • The post-course test consists of 20 questions for the compulsory course (all participants), 20 questions for those engaged in chemical experiments (Category B), and 20 questions for those engaged in biological experiments (Category C). Each test will be allotted 30 minutes.
  • If the nature of your experimental (research) work cannot be determined, please attend the full two-day course (Category C).
